2 Alternatives to Sports Analogies

When doing workshops and even in elearning, there is always pushback on using sports analogies. So one of the good alternatives I use is cooking examples. Hey, everyone eats. I illustrate how to define performance by first watching a video of a master chopping onions. I like the
Gordon Ramsey version.

Another method I use it to show a video of something the class knows little about but it fascinating to watch. Here’s one where you can ask the class to look for anything that tells you this person is proficient. Can you see it and measure it. Here’s one of the videos I use. Bandsaw Magic

Making the Transition to Remote Selling Web Series

Overview

Digital transformation, no longer a buzz phrase, is here to stay.  Your ability to interact and transact remotely with your Clients and prospects will ultimately determine your future success.  Three dynamic forces are forcing a transition from traditional face-to-face selling to various methods of remote selling. First, Clients/prospects are reluctant to meet face to face during the COVD19 pandemic. Second, Clients/prospects must become more comfortable dealing online and through social media. Third, all the new technologies provide many robust ways of finding, networking, and communicating with Clients/prospects.

The web series provides a learning experience and coaching for salespeople who already have basic sales skills that need to sell remotely rather than face-to-face. The coaching series is divided into five, two-hour Zoom meetings. Each session starts by exploring new methods and techniques of remote selling. Between sessions, participants are given an assignment to work on what they have learned. At subsequent sessions, participants receive feedback and coaching on the work they did.

Chapter 10: When Good Isn’t Good Enough

“Good morning, this is John Jones, your pilot. We’ll be flying down to Miami today. The weather in Miami is 85 and sunny, and we don’t expect any turbulence in route. By the way, I’m very excited about flying today. I just graduated from flight school with a 90% score on my landing test. That’s an A in anybody’s book.”

Ninety percent is a good score on any test. However, in this case, it’s simply not good enough. I’m sure you can imagine all the passengers pushing to the exits to try and get off this plane. There are many examples of jobs where anything less than 100% isn’t good enough. Do you expect your pharmacist to get your prescription filled 100% correctly? Getting it wrong could be deadly.

In some jobs, even small mistakes have huge consequences. I worked in a factory where they made resins. Resins are a result of a chemical reaction caused by mixing various components in large kettle-like vats. Adding chemicals in the wrong order in wrong amounts can cause a runaway reaction that can quickly burn the plant to the ground. There is simply no room for error.

The Myth of Learner Selected Training

Lots of programs are set up in a pick and choose manner so that learner can learn what they want to learn in any order. Sounds good but it doesn’t guarantee the learner will make good choices. This video from the Karate Kid illustrates the issue. How many people when they start to learn Karate would choice waxing the car, painting the fence and sanding the deck. Probably none. But the expert says, that’s the best way to learn it.
